MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus

for CS MAILsweeper for SMTP 4.3 Service Pack 2


You can integrate third-party antivirus tools with CS MAILsweeperTM for SMTP. This document provides information on the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus, which integrates CS MAILsweeper for SMTP with Sophos Anti-Virus.

About the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus

The MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus, supplied by Clearswift Limited, integrates CS MAILsweeper for SMTP with the Sophos Anti-Virus software, supplied by Sophos.

To use the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus, you must:

  1. Install the Sophos Anti-Virus third-party antivirus software on your PC.
  2. Install the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus on your PC.
  3. Create a MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus in CS MAILsweeper for SMTP.

You can uninstall a MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus if required.

Installing the Sophos Anti-Virus third-party antivirus software

You must install the Sophos Anti-Virus software on your PC and configure it to disable scheduled scans so that they do not interfere with the operation of CS MAILsweeper for SMTP.

To install the Sophos Anti-Virus:

  1. Obtain the Sophos Anti-Virus third-party antivirus software.
  2. Follow the supplier's installation instructions, ensuring that you clear the Enable InterCheck Client check box.

To configure the Sophos Anti-Virus:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, then Sophos Anti-Virus, and then click Sophos Anti-Virus.
  2. On the Scheduled tab, remove all the scheduled scans.
  3. Remove all immediate scans on selected paths.

Installing the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus

You can install the MIMEsweeper scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus either during or after installing CS MAILsweeper for SMTP. For more information about installing the scenario during CS MAILsweeper for SMTP installation, see the CS MAILsweeper for SMTP Reference Revision 2.2a.

To install the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus after CS MAILsweeper for SMTP has been installed:

  1. Close the MAILsweeper for SMTP Console.
  2. In Windows Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select MAILsweeper for SMTP, then Change.
  4. On the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for MAILsweeper for SMTP page, click Next.
  5. On the Program Maintenance page, select Modify then click Next.
  6. On the Custom Setup page, expand MAILsweeper for SMTP, then Anti-Virus Scenarios.

    A red cross on the icon for a Anti-Virus scenario indicates that the scenario is not currently installed on the local hard drive.

  7. Click the Sophos Anti-Virus icon and select one of the options from the drop-down menu:

    If you select one of the options to install this feature, the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus will be installed on the local hard drive.

    If you select This feature will not be available, a red cross is displayed on the icon for Sophos Anti-Virus, and the scenario will not be installed.

  8. Click Next.
  9. On the Ready to Modify the Program page, click Install.
  10. On the Installshield Wizard Completed page, click Finish.

When you next restart the MAILsweeper for SMTP Console, Sophos Anti-Virus is displayed in the list of available scenarios.

Creating a MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus in CS MAILsweeper for SMTP

To create a new MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus in CS MAILsweeper for SMTP:

  1. In the MAILsweeper for SMTP Policy snap-in, expand the Policies folder and then the scenario folder in which you want to create the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus.

    As with all CS MAILsweeper for SMTP scenarios, you can position it anywhere in the scenario folder hierarchy. If you want to scan both incoming and outgoing messages for potential threats, create the scenario in the root Scenarios folder.

  2. On the Action menu, point to New, then click Sophos Anti-Virus. The New Sophos Anti-Virus Wizard starts.
  3. Complete the wizard pages.

    Each wizard page describes the information it requires. If you need more information on any configuration options in a wizard page, click the Help button.

  4. In the MAILsweeper for SMTP Management snap-in, select the Services folder then stop and restart the Security service.

Uninstalling the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus

You can remove any instances of the MIMEsweeper Scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus in CS MAILsweeper for SMTP. You can save any existing instances before removing them if required.

To remove a MIMEsweeper scenario for Sophos Anti-Virus in CS MAILsweeper for SMTP:

  1. Close the MAILsweeper for SMTP Console.
  2. In Windows Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select MAILsweeper for SMTP, then Change.
  4. On the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for MAILsweeper for SMTP page click Next.
  5. On the Program Maintenance page, select Modify, then click Next.
  6. On the Custom Setup page, expand MAILsweeper for SMTP, then Anti-Virus Scenarios.
  7. Click the Sophos Anti-Virus icon and from the drop-down menu select This feature will not be available.

    A red cross is displayed on the icon for Sophos Anti-Virus.

  8. Click Next.
  9. On the Ready to Modify the Program page, leave Yes, please backup my current configuration into <location> selected if you wish to save the configured MIMEsweeper scenarios for Sophos Anti-Virus before removing them, or deselect the option if you do not.
  10. Click Install.
  11. On the Installshield Wizard Completed page, click Finish.
